Is a Canon Speedlite 430EX flash enough?
I currently own a Canon 400d.
I have a keen interest in portrait photography and am looking to buy a new flash for my camera.
I have noticed the Canon Speedlite 430EX flash. Is this all I will need for the time being or is it neccessary for me to purchase any other equipment as well?

The 430EX is a good flash. It not only can be a dedicated flash to your 400D, but it also has manual power settings to allow you (with some other gear) to use it off camera.
I think getting this flash is great for snapshots you take at family gatherings, that sort of thing (bounce the light where you can).
With extra gear – light stand, umbrella type stuff – you can also use it off camera. Portraits aren’t great with one light, but they are not bad, either. A lot of people shoot with one light until they build up a set. You can also try to make your own reflector to provide fill lighting (something like foamboard from an art store, even white posterboard will work for portraits).
