Canon Speedlite 430ex
How far does the flash/light of Canon Speedlite 430EX can reach?

I am planning to buy the said unit together with my 50mm f1.4 lens

Here’s what Canon claims in their specs for “normal flash”
For normal flash: Approx. 2.3-79.7 ft./0.7-24.3m

However, the range will be dependent upon 3 factors:
1) the power output of the flash
2) your aperture
3) your ISO setting on the camera.

Flash power is measured by guide number, which a given number at a set ISO, usually ISO 100. You then determine the correct aperture for exposure by taking the guide number and dividing it by the distance.

The Canon Speedlight 430EX has a Guide Number of 141′ (43 m) at ISO 100.

That means at full power the guide number is 141 feet. If your subject is 20 feet away, you take 141 feet/20 = 7.05 or select an aperture between f/5.6 and f/8.

Obviously now, if you have a lens that’s got a wider aperture, your flash range extends. Doing the math for a specific lens, it’s possible to get the maximum range at full power.

Let’s say you have an f/2.8 lens at that aperture. The maximum range would be 50 feet then. Stopping down reduces the range. And if you increased the ISO, you could increase the flash range somewhat.

So how does Canon come up with 79.7 feet? Simple–they used a 50mm f/1.8 lens. At f/1.8, you get a range up to 79 feet.

Realistically, most people use a Zoom Lens with an aperture of f/5.6 (at full telephoto) these days so your range will be more like 25 feet at ISO 100.

Hope my explanation makes sense to you.
